Athens Young Scholars Program Opportunity

The Young Scholars Program is a paid five-week summer internship opportunity for high school students interested in agricultural, food, and environmental sciences. Selected students work 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, actively engaged in research under the guidance of a faculty mentor on the UGA Athens campus. Young Scholars will be sent home on the 4th of July, Juneteenth, and the weekends. YSP aims to expose selected students to college life and encourage them to apply to the University of Georgia, especially CAES. Additionally, we want to build good relationships with faculty and serve as the school of choice for the selected promising students.

UGA faculty mentors and or their graduate assistant provide academics/lab/research experience. http://ysp.caes.uga.edu/

All interested students are eligible to apply. However, we only accept students who are interested in Agricultural, food, and Environmental Sciences and those with scientific knowledge, which can be difficult as most schools do not have students who understand the field of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences or are interested in them. I’ve attached majors so students can explore them before they apply.

Internship Dates: May 28, 2024- July 12, 2024. (Interns who are residents will move in on May 28th and all interns are required for onboarding and orientation on May 28th 2024).

Stipend:  $10.50 bi-weekly.

DormsInterns selected to reside on campus must deposit $700 towards dorms, and we will cover the rest. This year, we are accepting 20 students. 2-3 per high school, and we only accept 8 residents maximum. That means that we accept 8 interns who would have a commute of an hour plus.

Meal Plans: For residents, meal plans are covered, but for commuters, we only provide lunch tickets once a week. Commuters are local county schools who must commute each day. Residents are from the Atlanta metro area or out of state, etc.

Diaper Drive This Week!

We are excited to announce our support again this year of the Athens Area Diaper Bank and their efforts to spread Diaper Need Awareness.  Middle School is leading the cause but we want to help too!

Diapers are not covered by government assistance programs such as WIC or food stamps, yet diapers cost over $1000 per year.  In the U.S., about 1 of every 3 families struggles with diaper need.  In the Athens area alone, over 8,000 children are in need of diapers.  The Athens Area Diaper Bank is a tremendous resource to area families needing help to keep their children clean, dry, and healthy.

If you or your family is interested in supporting our efforts, please consider donating diapers of any size (open boxes or packs are accepted) any time this week.  Last year the Athens Academy community donated 23,000 diapers.  Our goal is to meet or beat that number this year!

Let’s help every child in our community stay clean, dry, and healthy!

Upper School Students may drop them off at the Deans’ Office!

Thank you for your help!
Congratulations to junior Molly Smith & sophomore Henry Thomas Garrard on being named Spartans of the Week! (Week of September 25):
Molly Smith & HT Garrard - SOTW

Just a 10th grader, HT has shown tremendous improvement this season. He trained hard this summer and is gaining the confidence that often comes when experience meets preparation. We are excited to cheer on HT as he gets better and better.

Molly is our most competitive runner on a team that is having a dominant season. She quietly goes about her training and continues to get faster and faster each meet. Her grit is infectious and quickly spreads throughout the rest of the team. She is a coach’s dream.”
