Congratulations to sophomores
Luke Phillips and Addie Savage for being named
Spartans of the Week(Week of January 15):

SpartanS of the Week 2023-24 3658247
“Luke is a great example of what dedication looks like! He consistently has a positive attitude on the pool deck with his teammates and is known for his work ethic and speed. His quick strokes have helped him make multiple state-cut times and he will now be representing ACAD at the State Championship Meet in February! Addie has continued to work and improve every day this season! She has a plan and is determined to be the best swimmer she can be. Outside the pool, her kindness creates a supportive atmosphere among teammates that makes her a valued asset to our team!”

NHS signup to volunteer at Lower School Science Night!

It is time for our annual NHS service project; Lower School Science Night!!  This is such a wonderful ACAD tradition, and a night the lower school students look forward to each year.  Remember, this is mandatory for all current NHS members.  NHS volunteers will be given a pizza dinner before the event.  The event will take place on Thursday February 22 from 6-7:30pm, and volunteers should arrive NO LATER than 5:15pm and plan to stay until 8pm.

This week all current active NHS members will begin receiving an email with a google form to sign up for their station.  Please select your top location to volunteer, and the locations will be filled up on a first come first served basis.  The invitation to sign up will be sent to Senior NHS members on Tuesday 1/23 and Junior NHS members on Wednesday 1/24.  If you have any questions please contact Ms. Neves.

Below is a form asking for your interest in a volunteer opportunity at the Gaines Elementary School! It is a tutoring service that was already created and they need some tutors for young students, If you are interested feel free to fill out the form to let a member of the math club know.

Social activism is a personal choice to engage in society and it involves working with other people to bring about change. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s approach to social change was nonviolent social activism. By choosing nonviolence, people were forced to think as opposed to react. In his words, “nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation”. It wasn’t always easy choosing the higher road and not reacting negatively to strong emotions, but his patience and his followers’ patience allowed their message and ideas to be heard instead of being lost in violence.

Everyone believes in something, whether you were taught a belief or you came to the conclusion on your own. But, in order to stand by what you say, you have to understand your thoughts, your morals, your reasoning behind what you believe. Each week, through the end of February, Bridges will be providing thought provoking quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and asking the Upper School to reflect on their beliefs and experiences, and to challenge them to dig deeper. We hope that these soft challenges will provide you with insight about yourself to grow and inspiration to do more.

Communication

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
