Social activism is a personal choice to engage in society and it involves working with other people to bring about change. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s approach to social change was nonviolent social activism. By choosing nonviolence, people were forced to think as opposed to react. In his words, “nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation”. It wasn’t always easy choosing the higher road and not reacting negatively to strong emotions, but his patience and his followers’ patience allowed their message and ideas to be heard instead of being lost in violence.
Everyone believes in something, whether you were taught a belief or you came to the conclusion on your own. But, in order to stand by what you say, you have to understand your thoughts, your morals, your reasoning behind what you believe. Each week, through the end of February, Bridges will be providing thought provoking quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and asking the Upper School to reflect on their beliefs and experiences, and to challenge them to dig deeper. We hope that these soft challenges will provide you with insight about yourself to grow and inspiration to do more.
Communication
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
