Black Birthright is the journey of a lifetime for Black American high school students. In traveling to Africa, Scholars learn their hidden history, experience the Continent’s rich culture and develop a stronger sense of self and purpose. During this extraordinary journey, Black Birthright Scholars have a comprehensive experience spanning history, culture, language, food, music, dance, art, entrepreneurship and community.
Applications for our next cohort open on February 1st. There is no application fee and Scholars are only required to pay a $1500 program fee – this includes the cost of their travel to Africa and the educational programming in the school year prior to travel (!!). All other costs are covered by The Tunstall Foundation.
You can see photos and videos of our travel experiences HERE.
You can see photos of our current and alumni Scholars HERE.
You can hear directly from a Black Birthright Scholar about what the program has meant to her personal development, growth and identity formation HERE.
