Service & Leadership

The Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board is currently accepting applications for new members from high school students (grades 10-12) from Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Franklin, Greene, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Stephens, and Walton counties.

Members learn about historic preservation and philanthropy before reviewing grant applications and going on site visits to look at historic preservation projects that need funding, and then ultimately deciding which organizations will receive funding (up to $33,000). It’s an incredibly unique extracurricular activity that has a real world impact in our community!

Applications are due September 13. Applications can be found at https://www.trrcobbhouse.org/junior-board-1.

The 2024 Athens Water Festival is right around the corner and we are looking for volunteers!

WHAT: The Athens Water Festival is an annual family event celebrating all things water. Attendees splash, play, and learn with hands-on water activities. This year’s theme is “LEGOs”—a timeless classic toy! Visit AthensWaterFestival.com for more details and to see pictures from previous years.

WHEN: Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. We have two volunteer shifts available: a morning shift from 9:30 AM to 12:15 PM, and an afternoon shift from 11:45 AM to 2:30 PM. Feel free to register for both shifts if you are feeling generous!

WHERE: Sandy Creek Park (400 Bob Holman Road), near the large pavilion/Community Building.

WHO: Anyone with a positive attitude can volunteer for the Water Festival! Volunteers will assist with event set-up and breakdown, man various stations, and facilitate water activities for attendees. Volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or teacher. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and food voucher for lunch during their shift.

HOW: Read through the various volunteer descriptions and register for your selected role/shift on our GivePulse page by visiting the following link and scrolling down to the Athens Water Festival event pages: https://givepul.se/w1uqlh

Model UN is hosting an interest meeting on this Tuesday, September 3rd from 3:30-4:00pm in W-2 for anyone who signed up or is just considering joining Model UN. (You do not have to be signed up or commit to Model UN, it will just be a great way to learn about the club!) We will be talking more about what Model UN is, introducing a great new competition especially for beginners, and answering any questions you might have, so if you’re even a little bit interested please come by! If you cannot attend Tuesday’s meeting but are still interested in joining Model UN this year, please email Dr. Turney or Mr. Scharfenberg so we can keep you in the loop!
