Service & Leadership

Friends of Ms. Moon are going on a mission trip to Jamaica this summer.
They will be involved with approximately 79 families. They have asked for school donations: book bags, used pencils, used crayons, composition type books, coloring books, etc. They don’t need to be new.  The families are extremely poor and they are so appreciative of what they get. Think about those 3 ring binders you throw out at the end of the year!
If you would like to help, please bring items to the Deans’ office. Thank you!

Honor Council Nominations

The student-led Honor Council is essential to the proper functioning of our honor system and the strength of our school community. In order to create an Honor Council that is representative of and has the support of the student body, the process for selecting candidates relies on nominations from the members of the class.

First thing on Monday, May 6, you received an emailed Honor Council nomination ballot for your class. Read the instructions to see the number of people you can nominate – select those who you believe possess honor, morality, and integrity, and who have the strength of character to uphold the honor code and act as role models, even in difficult circumstances.

Nominations will close at 4:00pm on Tuesday, May 7.

The election of the members of the Judiciary Board will take place next week.

To finish the school year on a fun note, the World Language department has decided to have a healthy competition between the Spanish and French language. Which language has the best songs?

In the Lampkin lobby you’ll find our song bracket, one side is Spanish songs and the other is French songs. Scan the QR codes to listen to the song and read the music lyrics. By the end of the bracket we will have the most popular song from both languages facing each other!

We hope that you decide to listen to some new music!

Here is the link for Round 2 voting (ends this Friday May 3). And here is the link for the online bracket.

Congratulations to sophomore Sloane Turner & junior Hoke Lucas
for being named Spartans of the Week(Week of April 22):

SpartanS of the Week 2023-24 4385878

As we approach the regional championships, the pressure rises. How you deal with that pressure plus your commitment to the team instead of themselves is a most prized quality. Sloane has surely grown and matured in our sport. I asked her to participate in a new event she had not trained for the entire season and her response was, ‘coach, if that is what the team needs, you can count on me.‘ She went out and finished 5th in the triple jump and was within a half inch of qualifying for the state sectionals. She then participated in a 4×800 relay that won the region title. Her new commitment to improving herself and her team first attitude is what makes Sloane our Spartan of the Week.

Our long time Pole vault coach, the late Tommy Deaton, often referred to our pole vault athletes as the ‘spartan air force‘. Hoke has been the Sky Marshal of our air force for the last two seasons. What really makes him stand out is not only his championship performances, but his hard work and resilience to overcome a slump. I admire his search for a solution and his hard work to get back to peak performance level. It is for that grit why he is my Spartan of the Week. It is not the falls that define a great competitor, it is the resilience to rise and try again and again. You are rocking it Hoke! Neville Anderson, Head Coach Varsity Track & Field

    • For example, if students have an exam that takes place on a Wednesday afternoon, they are not required to attend Wednesday morning classes. If students have an exam on a Thursday morning, they can leave school after their second block on Wednesday.
  • If students have a morning AP exam, they are expected to attend afternoon classes. If they miss afternoon classes, their absences are recorded, and they may miss classroom assignments.
  • Students who have College Board approval for extra time are required to stay for their entire exam period, and may not leave if they are done early. Students cannot waive their accomodations on the day of the exam.

Congratulations to junior Avery Roark & seniorAndrew Jones
for being named Spartans of the Week(Week of April 15):
SpartanS of the Week 2023-24 4334787

Avery has been instrumental in our success. She is an excellent student and is also participating in soccer so she is extremely busy. Avery had one of the most impressive matches of her career last week for us to win the Region Championship. She lost the first set of her match in the finals and was really down and was confused on how to come back and win her match. I reminded her that she’s playing a game and I want her to try and have fun and compete and let the chips fall where they may. Avery came back and won the last 2 sets to win her match and I was as proud of her as I have ever been. Andrew is in his first full year as a starter in our lineup. He has worked hard the past few years and waited his turn. I’m excited to see how Andrew finishes the season out. Bo Hodge, Head Coach Varsity Tennis

Athens Academy Service Information

Sign up to volunteer at Festival Day HERE!

The City of Refuge and Campus Kitchen are two great places for volunteering and the latter has the choice of volunteering on the weekends which is super convenient for people who have crazy schedules! Below are the links to the two places and all you have to do is simply sign-up. There are so many more places that you can also volunteer at, but these are the places that have a close place in my heart. If you have any questions please email me at adas24@athensacademy.org. Thank you so much!

Athens Academy’s Interact Club is excited to partner with Rise Against Hunger to host a meal packaging event on campus on Saturday, April 27, from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Tillman Center. The packaging events are a fun way to make a difference for people around our country and our world, and they’re a great volunteer opportunity for parents, students, family and friends.

Here’s the link to donate, register, and learn more about it. We are excited and hope you will join us for this great service opportunity!
