Honors Day is this Thursday. Parents of students who are receiving awards have received invitations in the mail. If you are not sure if you are receiving an award, please talk with your parents or Mrs. Thebeau or Dr. Rogers. Don’t forget it is a dress up day! When pd. 1 ends at 9:20, please meet your class in the following locations: 9th: (Freshmen will meet together to watch – see locations below), 10th: amphitheater (if it’s raining, Lampkin), 11th: outside of Tillman, 12: back of the library. Attendance will be taken at this time. Your class will enter the PH together. Seniors, go to the left all the way down. Juniors go to the right all the way down. Sophomores, fill in the top of both sides. Parents will be sitting in the middle.

Service & Leadership
To Be A Spartan is to Serve
The students of Athens Academy were working on leadership and service before the 2023-2024 school year even began! Fifty one students, 9th – 12th grades, registered to participate in a Leadership & Service Retreat on August 11, 2023. This amazing all day event was held in the Harrison Center activity room. In addition to learning about leadership styles and club organization, students participated in several ACAD community service projects such as making welcome signs for the school entrances, Spartan lawn signs supporting positive attitudes, and a landscape beautification project. Some student responses were “I thought this retreat was valuable!”, “ This retreat gave me insight into what being a leader is like at Athens Academy”, and “I loved how the faculty encourages us to be leaders and supportive of each other.” Faculty Sponsors of this campus event were Beth Farmer, Brian Olson, and Lorraine Thompson.
We have had a strong ACAD presence in this group for several years and our students have benefitted from the experience. The Junior Board is responsible for some $30,000 dollars each year which they allocate to a variety of historic preservation projects after reviewing grant applications and making site visits. There are also educational benefits as well.
ACC Leadership Opportunity!
The office of Public Information ACC is partnering with the Leisure Services Department to recruit 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students for the 2023-2024 Mayor’s Youth Council. Here’s some information about the application process, eligibility, and time commitment:
- WHO: ACCGov is seeking applications by Monday, September 4 from current 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are interested in taking part in the Mayor’s Youth Council. Eligible students can attend public or private schools or be homeschooled, but must be Athens-Clarke County residents. Applications, including references, should be submitted at www.accgov.com/youthcouncil.
- WHAT: The goal of the Mayor’s Youth Council is to encourage effective youth engagement in Athens-Clarke County and to provide an opportunity for youth voices to communicate directly with local government leadership. The Mayor’s Youth Council will encourage civic engagement and community service while also building a working understanding of how local government works.
- WHEN: Selected applicants will be interviewed in mid-September, with the first council meeting happening in early October. Council members will attend monthly meetings and give, at minimum, five hours/week to the council. Members will also work on small group projects throughout the year to suggest changes impacting youth today. Projects will be presented to the Mayor and other county leadership in May 2024.
