Athens Peer Court began in February of 2012, there are currently more than 30 volunteers serving as the advocates in hearings for first time offenders in the Clarke County Juvenile Court. Student volunteers develop their leadership skills and participate in community service. There are no grade point requirements or other prerequisites to join. The program is free, but does require students to have their own transportation both to UGA for the training and to the courthouse in downtown Athens for hearings. The commitment following completion of the training is one to two Tuesday evenings per month.
