“Riley is a senior captain for the Lady Spartans and has committed to play collegiately at WIlliam & Mary. She is the centerpiece of a ‘golden generation’ in girls’ soccer at the Academy. Riley has started the season with 14 goals and 9 assists. She is a great player but is also a great student, good citizen, and a consistent leader in all areas of school life.“ – Steve Stewart, Head Coach, Varsity Girls Soccer
Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.
Trung Trac and Trung Nhi were Vietnamese sisters who led a heroic, yet ultimately futile rebellion against Chinese conquerors in the 1st century C.E. Born into a powerful noble family, the Trungs were well-educated and particularly excelled in the study of literature and martial arts. After Trac’s husband was executed for his resistance to Chinese rule, the sisters initiated open rebellion with an army of 80,000 commanded by many female generals. The rebels freed northern Vietnam and established Trung Trac as queen, but the Chinese rallied and the Trungs were defeated three years later. Their leadership reflects the greater freedom and opportunity Vietnamese women enjoyed as compared to Chinese women under their Confucian system. The Trung sisters continue to be honored today for their commitment to Vietnam.
