The Watson-Brown Junior Board of Directors offers an opportunity to perform community service while simultaneously gaining practical skills in administering a substantial sum of money to fund local historic preservation projects.
The Junior Board is made up of seven to twelve 10th-12th grade students in a 14 county area surrounding Athens. Board members are chosen in late September and will attend monthly meetings (usually one Wednesday evening a month) to learn about philanthropy and historic preservation and how to read a grant application and conduct a site visit. Members are then trusted to conduct site visits in pairs or small groups and then make a recommendation to the entire group about whether or not that site should receive funding. The members have a yearly allotment of $33,000 to give to local organizations for historic preservation needs. The application is linked below. The deadline to apply is September 22.
