Friday – Advisory and ACAD Update

We are happy to report that we have three semifinalists for the 2022 Governor’s Honors Program:

  • Seager Hunt – Science /Chemistry
  • Julianne Peek – Visual Arts
  • Ricardo Urena – World Languages /Spanish

Approximately 3,200 students were nominated to the state-level competition, and over 1,300 of them have been selected as semifinalists for state interviews/auditions in February.  All of our applicants should be proud to have been put forward by our faculty.

Mary Frances Massey - Spartan of the Week

“Mary Frances has served as our Varsity Basketball Cheer Manager this season, and she has gone above and beyond our expectations of a manager. She has been a driving force for our team! Mary Frances helped me choreograph the middle school and Varsity cheerleader’s dance routine that they performed in the pep rally. Not only did she help with choreography, she also helped teach the dance along with teaching our Spartan Loyalty band dance. She was constantly throwing out ideas to help improve the cheers and dances the girls performed while also helping me clean up the routines and motions. Mary Frances attended every practice and game with a big smile on her face and continuously encouraged the team to keep team morale going in a positive direction! As a coach, I am so grateful to have had Mary Frances as my right-hand girl to help guide our team in a positive, optimistic way! Mary Frances, we will miss you so much next year! 🙂 – Kelsie Webb, Head Coach, Varsity Cheerleading

Luminaria flyer 2022rev..pptx

Join us on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bertelsmann PH for a magical night celebrating Upper School Fine Arts. Luminaria 2022 includes music ensembles from the US band and orchestra, readings from the creative writing students and the Bertelsmann Lobby will come to life with a “pop-up” visual arts exhibit featuring our senior artists. The first Luminaria was organized and presented in 2016.  For several years, the event was held in the Bertelsmann Lobby and in 2018 the event was moved to The Foundry and a packed house! This year we are excited to present Luminaria once again on the Athens Academy campus and to a “live” audience. You may be asking – what is a “Luminaria”? Simply put, it is a paper bag with a lit candle inside. Illumination, energy, and warmth are the inspiration of Luminaria and inspire this evening of the Arts.

Black-History-Month

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society—from activists and civil rights pioneers such as Harriet TubmanSojourner TruthMarcus GarveyMartin Luther King Jr.Malcolm X and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.
Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.

The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores “the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.”
