The Athens Academy Fine Arts Department is celebrating a fantastic year with a record six student art pieces winning awards in the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program. The program is the longest-running, most prestigious educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts in the United States.

Senior Lucy Hayes recently received the highest achievement, the Gold Key Scholastic Art Award, for their piece Bones (colored pencil).  Lucy’s artwork will continue to the national competition and winners will be announced later in the year.

Seniors Seager Hunt and Lena Ungerman also received Silver Key Awards. Seager received two awards for his paintings Self Portrait (oil) and Prince William Sound (acrylic). Lena won with her drawing Monopoly Pieces (graphite).

In addition, senior Robie Lucas and freshman Remy Marty each received Honorable Mention from the Scholastic Art Awards. Robie won for her painting Merry Go ‘Round (oil) and Remy was recognized for her drawing Tove Jansson (graphite).

NHS signup to volunteer at Lower School Science Night!

It is time for our annual NHS service project; Lower School Science Night!!  This is such a wonderful ACAD tradition, and a night the lower school students look forward to each year.  Remember, this is mandatory for all current NHS members.  NHS volunteers will be given a pizza dinner before the event.  The event will take place on Thursday February 23 from 6-7:30pm, and volunteers should arrive NO LATER than 5:15pm and plan to stay until 8pm.

This week all current active NHS members will begin receiving an email with a google form to sign up for their station.  Please select your top location to volunteer, and the locations will be filled up on a first come first served basis.  The invitation to sign up will be sent to Senior NHS members on Tuesday 1/24 and Junior NHS members on Wednesday 1/25.  If you have any questions please contact Ms. Neves.

January has been designated Mental Wellness month. It’s a month dedicated to you checking in with yourself and taking the time to improve your life in the areas that you can control. Many people do this in the form of resolutions but all of us can do this by reading and implementing some of the strategies in these Wellness Toolkits.  The Emotional Toolkit is a good place to start. If you need additional help on anything, know that Mr. Sears and others are ready and available to be helpful to you.
