Mary Frances Massey - Spartan of the Week

“Mary Frances has served as our Varsity Basketball Cheer Manager this season, and she has gone above and beyond our expectations of a manager. She has been a driving force for our team! Mary Frances helped me choreograph the middle school and Varsity cheerleader’s dance routine that they performed in the pep rally. Not only did she help with choreography, she also helped teach the dance along with teaching our Spartan Loyalty band dance. She was constantly throwing out ideas to help improve the cheers and dances the girls performed while also helping me clean up the routines and motions. Mary Frances attended every practice and game with a big smile on her face and continuously encouraged the team to keep team morale going in a positive direction! As a coach, I am so grateful to have had Mary Frances as my right-hand girl to help guide our team in a positive, optimistic way! Mary Frances, we will miss you so much next year! 🙂 – Kelsie Webb, Head Coach, Varsity Cheerleading

NHS Science Night Volunteers

Lower School Family Science Night is THIS THURSDAY February 24th!!  NHS members should arrive at the LS Barrett Hall at 5:15pm.  Check in with Ms. Neves at the door to find out which station you are working, and then you will get your pizza dinner.  After 15-20 minutes of pizza and fellowship, there will be a short orientation to prepare you for the night and get you familiar with your station.

Remember, this is MANDATORY for all NHS members (unless Ms. Neves is already aware of your approved conflict).  Even those who did not complete the station preference form are expected to attend, and you will be placed at stations according to need rather than your preference.

This is such a fun event, and the Lower School families really enjoy interacting with the Upper School students.  Ms. Neves is excited to see everyone this Thursday!

Luminaria flyer 2022rev..pptx

Join us on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bertelsmann PH for a magical night celebrating Upper School Fine Arts. Luminaria 2022 includes music ensembles from the US band and orchestra, readings from the creative writing students and the Bertelsmann Lobby will come to life with a “pop-up” visual arts exhibit featuring our senior artists. The first Luminaria was organized and presented in 2016.  For several years, the event was held in the Bertelsmann Lobby and in 2018 the event was moved to The Foundry and a packed house! This year we are excited to present Luminaria once again on the Athens Academy campus and to a “live” audience. You may be asking – what is a “Luminaria”? Simply put, it is a paper bag with a lit candle inside. Illumination, energy, and warmth are the inspiration of Luminaria and inspire this evening of the Arts.

Black-History-Month

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society—from activists and civil rights pioneers such as Harriet TubmanSojourner TruthMarcus GarveyMartin Luther King Jr.Malcolm X and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.
Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.

The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores “the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.”

Approximately 3,200 students were nominated to the state-level competition, and over 1,300 of them have been selected as semifinalists for state interviews/auditions in February.  All of our applicants should be proud to have been put forward by our faculty.

Emily Coggins - Spartan of the Week

“Emily is described as a  great teammate who is encouraging, positive, dedicated, and fun. She has improved every season and has been a great leader.Emily is an extremely talented equestrian as well and we are excited to see her success at the next level” – Brian Olson, Head Coach, Varsity Girls Basketball

Camden Lang - Spartan of the Week

“Camden comes to basketball every day with a positive attitude and is prepared to work hard. He is a great teammate with a unique sense of humor. Camden puts in the time necessary in the offseason to be successful and we are excited about Camden’s future in the basketball program.” – Mike Salvia, Head Coach, Varsity Boys Basketball

Spartan of the Week - Will Hines

image - 2022-02-09T122843.982

Congratulations to the Athens Academy swim team, who competed last weekend at Georgia Tech in the GHSA State swim meet! The team placed 5th overall out of 37 teams in the 1A-3A classification, and that was with only 4 swimmers competing in the meet! Other highlights include: Garrett Kennedy was runner-up in the 500 freestyle and took 3rd place in the 200 freestyle. Will Hines placed 5th in the 100 backstroke and 8th in the 100 butterfly. Daniel Huang placed 10th in both of his events – the 50 and 100 freestyles. Robbie Dillon played a key role in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, helping our team take 10th and 7th places. In addition, 5 school records were broken, 2 each by Daniel and Garrett as well as in the 200 freestyle relay.

This is not an official statistic, but IF we competed against only Class A schools, the boys would’ve finished as state runner-up, behind North Cobb Christian!

Here’s a link to the State Swim Meet Team results.

Attached are current Athens Academy swimming records. Thanks to Paige Kennedy for keeping up with and sharing this information.

Here’s a link to the updated GADA Director’s Cup standings.

Attached are current Athens Academy swimming records. Thanks to Paige Kennedy for keeping up with and sharing this information.

We are excited that our NHS service project is back up and running after a year off due to COVID!  Remember, this is mandatory for all current NHS members. The event will be masks REQUIRED for all in attendance, and NHS volunteers will be given a pizza dinner before the event.  The event will take place on Thursday February 24 from 6-7:30pm, and volunteers should arrive NO LATER than 5:30pm and plan to stay until 8pm.

This week all current active NHS members will begin receiving an email with a google form to sign up for their station.  Please select your top 5 locations to volunteer, and the locations will be filled up on a first come first served basis.  The invitation to sign up will be sent to Senior NHS members on Tuesday 1/25 and Junior NHS members on Wednesday 1/26.  If you have any questions please contact Ms. Neves.

ACAD Talks is coming up this March. If you are interested in giving a talk— even if you don’t have a particular talk in mind— check out this Goggle Form. The event is modeled after TED Talks, and students can give a talk on research, ideas, or experiences of their choice. Email Ms. Towery with questions.
