A giant shout out to the 10 following students: Jessica Ford, Sara Mack Lowe, Wade Slatcher, Courtney Coffeen, Elizabeth Raeber, Lizzie Walker, Alexis Keeney, Evan George, Lexi Sennowitz, and Anan Shen.  These Spartans showed teamwork and passion by spending part of their Monday Holiday cleaning the backstage area and working on the set for the spring production. This year’s Mock Trial competition was quite different than in previous years due to COVID restrictions, with only 99 schools–a fraction of the usual number—even competing. The competition was held completely virtually, with no district or region boundaries; instead, teams from around the state played in a tournament style, advancing through the rounds by winning their cases. Athens Academy’s team lasted through the first six rounds, making it to the top 64 but not advancing to the round of 32.  The team picked up eight awards:
  • Senior Katherine Woody won Outstanding Attorney in three different rounds.
  • Junior Sara Mack Lowe won one Outstanding Attorney award.
  • Sophomore Collin Edge and senior Jessica Ford each won two awards for Outstanding Witness.
In addition, four seniors were recognized for competing in Mock Trial all four years: Sarah Collins, Daniel Fern, Jessica Ford, and Katherine Woody. Way to go, Spartans!

Thank you so much for being diligent about wearing your masks! A few of you are still having trouble and for clarification, here is the process for you:

1. A faculty member will give you a warning.
2. After the warning, that faculty member will infract you and you will serve detention. This will be communicated to your parents as well.
3. After you serve detention, if another infraction occurs, you, your advisor, and your parents will meet with Mrs. Zalac and there will be escalated consequences.

This Is the Sign of a Great Thinker, According to Jeff Bezos and Adam Grant

Snippit:

*Because wisdom isn’t found in certainty. Wisdom is knowing that while you might know a lot, there’s also a lot you don’t know.

*Wisdom is trying to find out what is right rather than trying to be right.

*Wisdom is realizing when you’re wrong, and backing down graciously.

*Great thinkers aren’t afraid to be wrong. Great thinkers aren’t afraid to admit they don’t have all the answers. Great thinkers aren’t afraid to say “I think” instead of “I know.”

“I can truly say that Kavya is the heart of our girls track and field team. She leads our team in a quiet way, always quick to volunteer to run an event if a teammate cannot. She is always a steady and consistent performer, a factor in every event she competes in. Her work ethic is second to none, and is a big reason why she is all-state in the triple jump.” – Neville Anderson, Head Coach, Varsity Track & Field

“Grant is new to our track and field team, furthermore, he signed up to join our distance squad. Grant has worked hard! He has embraced the teams ‘we can compete with anyone’s’ culture. Grant’s improvement in the 800M has been dramatic and truly reflects how hard he has worked. His performance is a contributing reason why our 4×800 relay is currently ranked second in Class A Private.” – Neville Anderson, Head Coach, Varsity Track & Field
