Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.
Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) achieved fame as a ballerina and the muse of the choreographer George Ballanchine in the mid-20th century. Born on the Osage Reservation, Tallchief started out as one of thefive so-called Oklahoma Indian ballerinas (along with her sister) and used her platform as prima ballerina to challenge discrimination and misconceptions about Native Americans. Tallchief is pictured here in the title role of Ballanchine’s “Firebird.”
