Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.
Qiu Jin (1875-1907) was a Chinese revolutionary, feminist, and writer. Born to a wealthy family, she was well-educated and got the opportunity to study in Japan in 1903. There Qiu joined several anti-Qing revolutionary groups and edited a journal in which she promoted nationalism along with rights for women, including education, free marriage, and the end of foot binding. Back in China, Qiu published a radical women’s journal and served as head of a school that covertly provided military training for revolutionaries. Qiu was executed by beheading in 1907 for organizing a failed uprising against the Qing dynasty. Today, she is seen in China as a martyr and a national hero.
