Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.
Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) was a prominent figure in India’s struggle for independence, working closely with Mohandas Gandhi. She played an important role in highlighting the need for women’s involvement in the movement and advocated for women’s empowerment, workers’ rights, and education. Naidu served as the first female president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and was the first female governor after independence, overseeing the United Provinces from 1947 until her death. She was also a celebrated writer and Gandhi gave her the nickname, “Nightingale of India,” because of the beauty of her poetry. In recognition of Sarojini Naidu’s contributions to politics and culture, India celebrates National Women’s Day on the anniversary of her birth, February 13.
