Spartan of the Week - Popi Marquez

“Popi Marquez is this week’s Spartan of the Week for her dedicated service producing media viewed by thousands on numerous webcasts for the past 3 years. Starting as a Sophomore, Popi was our 1st sideline reporter which required her to conduct research for prospective interviews, capture and edit media, and handle “live” segments as they “popped” up. Several of her interviews included a pregame interview with Coach Jeff Saturday, an NFL Pro Bowl center, ESPN sports analyst, and then coach of the Hebron Christian Lions. Popi has also conducted several interviews with ACAD football and basketball coaches, as well as numerous alumni like Houston Gaines ’13, Kaleb Bryant ’16, Ned McGregor ’11, and Rahul Singh ’07.  She’s currently serving as co-president of the Media Production club and is hoping to pursue a degree in broadcast journalism. Go Spartans! Mike Callinan, Webcast

YLA Applications

Youth Leadership Athens is a premier leadership and civic engagement program for high school sophomores and juniors (and this year seniors) that brings together teens from all of our Athens-area schools to learn, work, and explore together.

Applications are being accepted now through November 30th. The application process is simple and fully online to make these easy for our students, parents, and references.

We are looking for those teens who are leaders, emerging leaders, and prospective leaders. We have many outstanding Athens Academy grads among our alumni and hope to continue that tradition with your current students.

There is no limit to how many students from a school may participate and our goal is to create a class with students in different stages of their leadership journey.

This week is an A week and today is an A Day.

9:45 This Week

Thursday – Seminar

Friday – Advisory

Be sure you check out the SpartanNet post about course descriptions for second semester! You may start signing up tomorrow!

Are you interested in writing for The Spartan Review but don’t know where to start? Sign up for  Ms. Evans’ Honors Journalism course! You’ll learn to write basic news articles, restaurant/culture reviews, profiles, op-eds, and more. Open to grades 9-12. Meets during Block 8. Contact Mrs. Bowles or Ms. Evans with questions.

Attention readers!  Due to overwhelmingly good participation in the last two book club meetings, The Spartan Book Club will split for our next meeting.  9th and 10th graders have voted and will read The House on the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune.  11th and 12th graders will read The Push by Ashley Audrain.  Our next meeting will be the week of December 6-9th.  Please see Mrs. Street with any questions and happy reading!

Katie Scott

Katie has done such a great job building her skill and talent. It’s been fun to watch her improve with each piece she’s done. She is recently taking on oil painting and is doing great with that as well. I’m excited to see her progress throughout the next couple of years.

12th Man’s Theme is Alexander’s Army

You may wear camo or Spartan Spirit today!

Mask Optional

1. Respect decisions: From Mr. Thorsen’s letter to our community:

“Many students and adults will choose to continue to wear a mask indoors and we want to respect and support these decisions. Some are excited for holiday guests, travel or mindful of a loved one at home with health concerns. The reasons will vary and we want to provide a safe and positive environment for all.”

2. Please carry a mask with you (or in your bag):

We will still need to wear a mask in large gatherings. Make sure you bring one to the PH on Tuesday and Wednesday.

3. You may have had a sneaky beard under your mask, please make sure you are clean shaven. Seniors may have beards if they are well-kept.

“Wendy has brought such a positive, bright spirit to our JV Cheerleading team this season. She comes into every practice and game with a big smile on her face, ready to cheer on the Spartans, and to help her team in any way she can. Wendy is always ending our practices with uplifting compliments to encourage her teammates and she is always the first to volunteer for anything she can. Some may have seen Wendy selling her heart out at our Spirit Table on Friday nights, and she has been a driving force in our spirit item sales. She has volunteered and taken extra shifts to work the Spirit Table just because she loves being involved and spreading spirit at Athens Academy. We are so lucky to have Wendy in our program and we look forward to watching her grow as an Athens Academy Cheerleader during the basketball cheer season! Great job, Wendy!! Kelsie Webb, Head Coach, Cheerleading
