This Is the Sign of a Great Thinker, According to Jeff Bezos and Adam Grant

Snippit:

*Because wisdom isn’t found in certainty. Wisdom is knowing that while you might know a lot, there’s also a lot you don’t know.

*Wisdom is trying to find out what is right rather than trying to be right.

*Wisdom is realizing when you’re wrong, and backing down graciously.

*Great thinkers aren’t afraid to be wrong. Great thinkers aren’t afraid to admit they don’t have all the answers. Great thinkers aren’t afraid to say “I think” instead of “I know.”

“I can truly say that Kavya is the heart of our girls track and field team. She leads our team in a quiet way, always quick to volunteer to run an event if a teammate cannot. She is always a steady and consistent performer, a factor in every event she competes in. Her work ethic is second to none, and is a big reason why she is all-state in the triple jump.” – Neville Anderson, Head Coach, Varsity Track & Field

image (69)

“Grant is new to our track and field team, furthermore, he signed up to join our distance squad. Grant has worked hard! He has embraced the teams ‘we can compete with anyone’s’ culture. Grant’s improvement in the 800M has been dramatic and truly reflects how hard he has worked. His performance is a contributing reason why our 4×800 relay is currently ranked second in Class A Private.” – Neville Anderson, Head Coach, Varsity Track & Field

Claudette Colvin

Claudette Colvin (born in 1939) is an unsung pioneer in the civil rights movement. A gifted student and member of the NAACP Youth Council, she was acutely aware of the inequities of segregated Montgomery, Alabama. On March 2, 1955, 15 year-old Colvin refused to give up her seat for a white woman on a crowded bus and thus became the first person arrested for challenging the city’s bus segregation laws. Though Colvin was not made the face of the Montgomery Bus Boycott (that started nine months later) because she was young and had become pregnant, she was named as one of the plaintiffs and testified in the federal court case that ultimately led to the Supreme Court ruling that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York City with her son and worked as a nurse aide. Overlooked for decades, Colvin’s story has received due attention since the publication of a 2009 biography.

Safi is a human backboard! He wears his opponents down with his relentless consistency. However, he is not by any means one-dimensional – he hits hard when he needs to, attacks the net when the opportunity strikes and is not afraid to hit moon balls if that is what it takes to win the point. He is the winningest player on our team with a personal record of 8-0, giving up only 1 set in 8 matches and outscoring his opponents 95 games to 24! Way to go Safi! – Jami Cashin, Head Coach, Varsity Tennis

“Carson excels at tennis because of her hard work and perseverance. She shows up to every practice ready to improve, always with a smile on her face and a great attitude. She works so hard to create a positive atmosphere so that practices are fun and the players enjoy their time together, all while inspiring her peers to work hard to improve their game. The team is so lucky to have her as their team leader this year, leading by example on and off the court. Even when she was injured, she was at every practice and every match, cheering on her teammates and helping them to stay focused and work hard. We are so excited to have her back on the courts and can’t wait to see what the season holds for her and the rest of the team! Congratulations Carson!” – Jami Cashin, Head Coach, Varsity Tennis

Lola Álvarez Bravo

Lola Álvarez Bravo (1903-1993) was a photographer and pioneer in Mexico’s post-revolutionary cultural renaissance. She learned the art and technique of photography from her husband, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and the couple worked together while playing an active role in Mexico City’s artistic community that included Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. After separating from her husband in 1934 when he sought to restrict her work, Álvarez Bravo embarked on a solo career that sought to reveal the spirit, culture, and political struggles of Mexico by documenting ordinary life on the streets, beaches, and countryside. She was also Kahlo’s principal portraitist and Mexico’s first female professional photographer.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.

Hypatia

Hypatia (c. 370-415 C.E.) was an Alexandrian philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer whose academic achievements were overshadowed by her brutal murder. She was educated by her father, Theon, who was a renowned mathematician and professor at the University of Alexandria, and even collaborated with him on some of his commentaries. Hypatia became a scholar in her own right, writing on astronomy (including work with the astrolabe) and mathematics. She also pursued Neoplatonian philosophy and her public lectures were very popular. It was this popularity – and her promotion of ideas that were considered by Christians to be heresy – that made her a target of the new archbishop who was attempting to assert his authority in a struggle between religious and civil authority. When Hypatia was on her way to the university, a mob of Christian zealots dragged her from her carriage into a church where they stripped her and beat her to death. Though her murder and martyrdom to philosophy is remembered more than her scholarship, Hypatia was known as a woman of great knowledge, an excellent teacher, and perhaps the first woman in mathematics.

Nur Jahan

Nur Jahan (1577-1645) was an empress who effectively acted as co-ruler of the Mughal Empire. Named Mirh-un-Nisa by her Persian noble family, she married Emperor Jahangir only after her first husband was executed for treason in 1607. Renamed Nur Jahan (meaning “light of the world”) by her new husband, she was renowned as a poet, expert tiger hunter, garden designer, and architect. She also quickly established herself as a political force: Jahangir sought her advice before issuing most orders and she sat alongside her husband at court. She issued at least one order independently, signing it “Nur Jahan, the Lady Emperor.” and she was the only Mughal empress to have coins struck with her name on them. After Jahangir died, she was imprisoned and then exiled by the new emperor, Shah Jahan.

Manuela Sáenz

Manuela Sáenz (1797-1856) was an Ecuadorian feminist and revolutionary. Sáenz grew up in Quito as the illegitimate daughter of a Spanish noble, but moved to Lima in 1819 with her wealthy English merchant husband. After learning about resistance efforts against Spanish rule at the social gatherings she hosted, Sáenz joined the conspiracy to liberate Peru. In 1822, she left her husband and returned to Quito where she met and fell in love with Simón Bolívar. Not merely Bolívar’s lover, Sáenz did political work that included distributing leaflets, advocating for women’s rights, and spying. She also served as a soldier, supply runner, and nurse during several battles and she was awarded military rank (ultimately Colonel) for her efforts. After Bolívar’s death, Sáenz was forced into exile by his enemies and largely forgotten. In recent decades, Sáenz’s memory has been revived in Latin America and she is seen as an important figure in the struggle for independence and a feminist role model.

Virginia Hall

Virginia Hall (1906-1982) was the most successful American female spy of World War II. Her passion for languages and extensive knowledge of Europe led her to the foreign service and she worked in a clerical position at the US Embassy in Turkey in the 1930s (where she lost her left leg in a hunting accident). When the war broke out, Hall drove ambulances on the front lines for the French army and then joined the British Special Operations Executive. She spent thirteen months in France from 1941-1942 organizing resistance activities, running safehouses, and delivering intelligence to the British government. Forced to flee France one step ahead of the Gestapo, Hall later joined the American Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the CIA) and returned to France in 1944. To avoid Nazi detection, she used make up to pose as an old woman while she armed, organized, and sometimes even commanded resistance units. Hall was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1945 and continued to work for the CIA until her retirement in 1966.

Trung Sisters

Trung Trac and Trung Nhi were Vietnamese sisters who led a heroic, yet ultimately futile rebellion against Chinese conquerors in the 1st century C.E. Born into a powerful noble family, the Trungs were well-educated and particularly excelled in the study of literature and martial arts. After Trac’s husband was executed for his resistance to Chinese rule, the sisters initiated open rebellion with an army of 80,000 commanded by many female generals. The rebels freed northern Vietnam and established Trung Trac as queen, but the Chinese rallied and the Trungs were defeated three years later. Their leadership reflects the greater freedom and opportunity Vietnamese women enjoyed as compared to Chinese women under their Confucian system. The Trung sisters continue to be honored today for their commitment to Vietnam.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.

Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) was a Kenyan scholar, women’s rights advocate, and environmentalist. After undergraduate education in the United States, she earned a PhD in veterinary anatomy from the University of Nairobi in 1971. While teaching at Nairobi, Maathai campaigned for equal benefits for women on the staff and was active in the National Council of Women of Kenya. Under the auspices of the Council, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement targeting the social and economic needs of rural women. The Movement encouraged women to plant trees for food and firewood, and to combat environmental degradation. Maathai’s environmental concerns led her to politics and she was elected to parliament in 2002, then she founded a political party focused on a platform of conservation. In 2004, Maathai became the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
