Alicia Boole Stott

Alicia Boole Stott (1860-1940) was an Irish-born English mathematician who is best known for having a remarkable grasp of four-dimensional geometry. She received her early mathematical training from her self-taught mother and she similarly never received a university education. Instead, while raising two children and working as a secretary, Stott pursued geometry work on her own, including building physical models, and she coined the term “polytopes” to describe the six regular four dimensional hypersolids. Stott initiated correspondence with Professor Pieter Schoute once she learned of his work in the same area and their collaboration led Stott to publish six papers between 1900 and 1910.

Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee

Mabel Ping-Hua Lee (1896-1966) was an academic, suffragist, and religious leader. Born in Guangzhou, China, Lee moved to the United States at age 9 (where her father already lived as a missionary pastor) after receiving an academic scholarship. She was an excellent student who earned degrees at Barnard College before becoming the first Chinese woman to get a PhD in Economics from Columbia University. Lee was also interested in women’s rights and was an active suffragist by the time she was 16, despite the fact that the Chinese Exclusion Act barred Chinese immigrants from obtaining citizenship and thus voting rights. After her father’s death, Lee took over his leadership of the First Chinese Baptist Church in New York City and worked for the rest of her life to improve the rights and status of the Chinese-American community via a variety of social services, including education and healthcare.

Women’s History Month

Queen Nzinga

Queen Nzinga (1583-1663) was the ruler of Ndongo and Matamba who fought against Portuguese encroachment in the region. Initially, she attempted to ally with the Portuguese, establishing Ndongo as a middleman (rather than supplier) in the slave trade, but that relationship quickly soured. Nzinga spent the next three-plus decades leading a militant resistance against Portuguese domination, often dressing as a male warrior when she led her troops into battle. She created a powerful kingdom, but she was unable to fully defeat the Portugese and, after her death, Angola became the first European colony in sub-Saharan Africa. Though her relationship to the slave trade is complicated, Queen Nzinga is celebrated today in Angola as an anticolonial warrior and a role model for women in a male-dominated society.

Qiu Jin

Qiu Jin (1875-1907) was a Chinese revolutionary, feminist, and writer. Born to a wealthy family, she was well-educated and got the opportunity to study in Japan in 1903. There Qiu joined several anti-Qing revolutionary groups and edited a journal in which she promoted nationalism along with rights for women, including education, free marriage, and the end of foot binding. Back in China, Qiu published a radical women’s journal and served as head of a school that covertly provided military training for revolutionaries. Qiu was executed by beheading in 1907 for organizing a failed uprising against the Qing dynasty. Today, she is seen in China as a martyr and a national hero.

Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) was a prominent figure in India’s struggle for independence, working closely with Mohandas Gandhi. She played an important role in highlighting the need for women’s involvement in the movement and advocated for women’s empowerment, workers’ rights, and education. Naidu served as the first female president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and was the first female governor after independence, overseeing the United Provinces from 1947 until her death. She was also a celebrated writer and Gandhi gave her the nickname, “Nightingale of India,” because of the beauty of her poetry. In recognition of Sarojini Naidu’s contributions to politics and culture, India celebrates National Women’s Day on the anniversary of her birth, February 13.

Queen Nanny

Queen Nanny was an 18th century political leader, warrior, and spiritual advisor for the Windward Maroons, a group of escaped slaves who built a community in the Blue Mountains. Born a member of the Ashanti tribe in present-day Ghana around 1680, Nanny was captured and enslaved on a plantation in Jamaica. After escaping, she organized attacks on plantations, freeing other slaves and gaining food and weapons. These raids forced the British to negotiate a freedom and land agreement with the Windward Maroons, securing communities that still exist today. Queen Nanny is recognized as a national hero in Jamaica and appears on Jamaica’s $500 bill.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month was established by Congress in 1987 to celebrate the achievements of women in American history. Each day this month, we will recognize women from America and other parts of the world who have made important contributions to humanity.

Maria Tallchief

Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) achieved fame as a ballerina and the muse of the choreographer George Ballanchine in the mid-20th century. Born on the Osage Reservation, Tallchief started out as one of thefive so-called Oklahoma Indian ballerinas (along with her sister) and used her platform as prima ballerina to challenge discrimination and misconceptions about Native Americans. Tallchief is pictured here in the title role of Ballanchine’s “Firebird.”

Congratulations to freshman Shelby Lander for being named SPARTAN OF THE WEEK (week of February 15):
Shelby has been such a great addition to our basketball cheer team this year. She has been totally committed, never complains, and always does exactly what she needs to for herself and her team. She is always prepared, ready to cheer, and does everything with a big smile on her face! Shelby has jumped right in and shown how much she loves and cares for the Athens Academy Spartans! Shelby is kind, thoughtful, and always looking to improve herself at practices and games. I am pleased to advise that under difficult, socially-distanced circumstances, our US Robotics team, 2858, produced an excellent Engineering Journal and submitted videos of our robot in action that allowed us to take 2nd place in the Gwinnett FTC League and win the Inspire Award.   – Mr. Callinan

FYI:  Inspire Award description:
  Inspire Award:
This judged award is given to the team that best embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FIRST Tech Challenge program. The team that receives this award is a strong ambassador for FIRST programs and a role model FIRST team. This team is a top contender for many other judged awards and is a gracious competitor. The Inspire Award winner is an inspiration to other teams, acting with Gracious Professionalism® both on and off the playing field. This team shares their experiences, enthusiasm and knowledge with other teams, sponsors, their community, and the judges. Working as a unit, this team will have shown success in performing the task of designing and building a robot.
  • Team must submit an engineering portfolio. The engineering portfolio must include summary information about the robot design, information about the team, and a team plan. The entire engineering portfolio must be high quality, thoughtful, thorough, concise and well-organized.
